After her extravagant performance at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (April 14), Selena Gomez is getting some flack for her choice of wardrobe.
Upon seeing her Bollywood-inspired show in which she wore a bindi on her forehead, one Hindu group is demanding an apology from the 20-year-old actress/singer.
Leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, explained, “The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol.”
Taking aim at the “Spring Breakers” star, he added, “It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”
However, the Times of India proclaimed, “While some international blogs are calling it “tribal finery,” we can spot a good bindi when we see it.”
