Michael McKean has a New Yorker”s stamina – and sense of humor.

A day after his horrific encounter with a car that ran out of control onto the sidewalk and slammed him, bleeding, into a Upper West Side Manhattan street, the actor, 64, was cracking wise with the producer of his Broadway show.

“We always tell each other to break a leg in this business. I never thought it would happen to me this way!” McKean joked from his hospital bed to his The Best Man producer Jeffrey Richards, reports the New York Post.

McKean sustained a broken leg and facial lacerations as a result of Tuesday afternoon”s accident, which took place as he was walking in his neighborhood. Witnesses on the scene told local news outlets he was groaning in pain and coughing up blood.

McKean underwent surgery Wednesday, says the Post.

Wednesday night, the actor, a smiling redhead best known for playing Lenny in the “70s sitcom Laverne and Shirley and for his appearances in the satirical mockumentaries This Is Spinal Tap, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, Tweeted: “Lucky man: best wife, great kids, awesome docs and nurses, priceless friends; a little overwhelmed by the sweet tweets.”

The Post also reports that McKean”s wife, actress Annette O”Toole (Smallville), flew to his side from Los Angeles Wednesday. She Tweeted: “Thank you dear people for your love and support. @MJMcKean and I so appreciative. He is getting great care. Spirits are good.”

Movie critic and historian Leonard Maltin Tweeted: Sending healing thoughts and all of my best wishes to the incredibly talented Michael McKean, here”s to a speedy recovery.”

Gore Vidal”s The Best Man, starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Eric McCormack, John Larroquette and Candice Bergen, is Tony nominated for best revival. McKean – who had never missed a performance of a show before in his working life – has been replaced by actor James Lecesne, though producer Richards tells the Post he hopes to welcome McKean back to Broadway soon.
