Taking a massive departure from their normal gigs, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon play gay lovers Liberace and Scott Thorson in the upcoming Behind the Candelabra biopic.
And both the Wall Street stud and the Bourne Identity hunk are in full garb for a special cover feature for Entertainment Weekly.
Damon explained that the numerous gay sex scenes were not exactly comforting for him. The scene where Im behind him and going at him, we did that in one take. We do it. Cut. Theres a long pause. And then you just hear Steven [director Steven Soderbergh] go, Well I have no notes.
As for his preparation process, Douglas shared that hed met Liberace before and that his father Kirk Douglas was a friend of the flamboyant performer. There”s a tremendous amount of clips and films that certainly give you a sense and idea of the spirit of Liberace.
And director Steven Soderbergh lamented the difficulty he faced in getting the project picked up by a studio. There”s no question that it”s unfortunate to see the movie through a contemporary lens and know that they weren”t able to be as open back then as people are today.
Meanwhile, Matt marveled at how clothing-intensive the gig ended up being. I probably spent more time in wardrobe fittings than I did in my previous 15 projects.
