Michael McKean, the smiling redhead best known for playing Lenny in the “70s sitcom Laverne and Shirley and for his appearances in the satirical mockumentaries This Is Spinal Tap, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, is in stable condition after being hit by a car on an Upper West Side Manhattan sidewalk Tuesday afternoon.
McKean, 64, was being treated at St. Luke”s-Roosevelt Hospital for a broken leg and facial lacerations. “Hopefully, he”ll be fine,” his manager, Harriet Sternberg, told the New York Post.
“He has sustained multiple injures,” she said, “and we are trying to find out the extent of other injuries.”
Reports say the car went out of control before jumping the curb at 86th Street and Broadway as McKean was walking. Its impact reportedly knocked him from the pavement into the street, and he was seen coughing up blood, according to a TV news report. Three people in the vehicle were also hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police said no criminal charges were being filed.
The actor lives on the Upper West Side with his wife, actress Annette O”Toole (Smallville), and is currently appearing in an all-star Broadway revival of Gore Vidal”s The Best Man, with James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury.
“He”s upset about missing his curtain,” Sternberg told the Post. “He”s never missed a performance in his career.”
