After months of contemplation, a judge accepted James Holmes” please of not guilty by reason of insanity on Tuesday afternoon (June 4).
The current news sets the stage for whats sure to be a lengthy mental evaluation of the Colorado theater shooting suspect after his horrifying massacre during the Dark Knight premiere on July 20, 2012.
According to reports, the court clerk placed a written advisory of the ground rules in front of Holmes for him to follow along as Judge Carlos Samour Jr. read through the points.
After the reading, Judge Samour asked if James had any questions in which he replied no.
I find Mr. Holmes understands the effects and consequences of the not guilty by reason of insanity plea, Samour said. He was looking at the advisement and appeared to be following along.
Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in an Aurora, CO movie theater and was charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder for which prosecution is seeking the death penalty.
With the current news, Holmes now has the opportunity to avoid execution by conducting multiple doctor evaluations and face trial in front of a jury. If the jurors find him not guilty by reason of insanity, he would be committed to a mental hospital.
