The show’s bosses have described his character, known as Kal, as a charming, roguish character with a wondering eye. Kal is due to “set tongues wagging and pulses racing” and is “likely to upset a few of the menfolk of Weatherfield.”
Jimi is no stranger to TV soaps after playing Dr Fred Fonseca in EastEnders from 1988-2000. The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant will begin filming in September and his first scenes will air in November.
“Jimi’s character is going to have a swift impact on the lives of many in Weatherfield,” said a source.
Producer Stuart Blackburn said: “I’m thrilled to welcome Jimi to Coronation Street with credits that include East is East, The Guru and Blood Diamond, getting him on board is a real coup.”
Jimi starred in popular British film East is East alongside his good friend Chris Bisson, a former Coronation Street actor who now stars in Emmerdale.
Jimi recently appeared in BBC drama The Syndicate. He also took a spin around the dancefloor on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, when he was partnered with professional dancer Flavia Cacace.
Jimi and Flavia began dating while on the show together and announced their engagement in April this year. They currently live together in Crouch End, London.
