He”s gearing up for the premiere of his highly anticipated drama “The Butler” and during promotions, James Marsden covered the September 2013 issue of Out magazine.
After teaming up with lensman Matthias Vriens-McGrath for the spread, the 39-year-old actor chatted about his career hopes and even revealed what he was like as a lonely teen.
Check out a few highlights from Mr. Marsden”s interview below. For more, be sure to visit Out!
On his favorite roles :
“I”m actually less comfortable being the smoldering hot guy. I”d rather play the goofball or a rube than a steamy leading-man role. I”ve never been that guy – I was a skinny loner in high school.”
On his acting:
“I never set out to make a bad movie. Some movies just turn out bad, and I want to scream, “Why did you pick that take!” Then there are some movies that I”ve been in that I was sure people would laugh at, that have become huge. I thought “The Notebook” was going to be a schmaltzy Movie of the Week – type thing , and here we are! So far, I”ve been incredibly fortunate in the roles I”ve been offered. Sometimes I worry that I”ll stop getting offered these “break in case of emergency” sell-out parts.”
On learning from his films:
“I think the key to comedy- and I learned this on the set of “Enchanted” and “Hairspray” – is that the audience needs to feel like everyone is having fun. It”s so obvious to me and the audience when an actor is having a miserable time doing a movie.”
