His wife the Duchess of Cambridge, threatened to steal the show, dazzling in a green £1,400 Mulberry dress stamped with peace signs.
The reception was a curtain-raiser allowing the 300 journalists, who will cover the royal celebrations, to meet the number one family in the land.
The Queen even broke protocol by allowing tweets to be sent from inside the palace from a specially designated “Tweet Suite”.
During the night, the royals mingled with some of the most well-known faces on British screens including This Morning favourite Phillip Schofield, who was seen laughing with the Duchess of Cornwall, and Fearne Cotton.
The Radio 1 DJ later tweeted that William had asked her to give him a shout out on her show.
