In an effort to increase interest in the Beautiful Game in China, David Beckham was named the country”s global soccer ambassador on Monday (March 4).
While the 37-year-old footballer will still play games for his new team, Paris-St. Germain, the superstar will attend matches in China and will make visits to children who are interested in the sport.
In a statement, Mr. Beckham said, “I am honored to have been asked to play such an important role at this special time in Chinese football history. I”m excited by the prospect of promoting the world”s greatest game to Chinese sports fans as I”ve seen firsthand the growing interest in football there.”
He continued, “This is a wonderful sport that inspires people across the world and brings families together, so I”m relishing the opportunity of introducing more fans to the game.”
