Although Charlie Brooks has appeared in The Bill, Wired, and Bleak House, it’s the character of Janine Butcher for whom Charlie will be remembered for.
Since her first appearance in BBC soap Eastenders in 1999, Janine has been through drug addiction, financial problems, prostitution, several murders, marriages and divorces, and for her performance as one of Britain’s most hated characters, Charlie has won variations of Villian of the Year awards ten times.
She left the soap in 2004 to focus on other television and theatre opportunities, but returned in 2008.
Of her decision to return she told The Mirror: “I was just going to go back for a year, but I had a meeting with the boss last week and we’re going to go for another year. So lots more time to get up to much mischief.”
In 2011 Charlie won the Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing and during a break from Eastenders in 2012 she took part in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here which she won.
Charlie left Eastenders again in 2014, and revealed exclusively to ! magazine that she was scared about the immediate future – but also excited to see what’s out there, as well as spend more time with her daughter.
“I was so lucky in landing a role like Janine when I was only 17,” she said. “I grew up there and the thought of not being there does sometimes frighten me. I have days where I am hugely insecure and question my ability to hack it elsewhere but ultimately, the excitement of the challenge overrules those feelings.”
