A look back at the stunning rocks of past royal brides
Princess Madeleine of Sweden will walk down the aisle to marry American businessman Chris O”Neill in the royal wedding of the year on Saturday.

On what will be a fairytale day for the real-life Princess, the highlight will surely be when her new husband places her wedding band on her finger.

In honour of that special moment, ! Online takes a look back at the stunning rings worn by past royal brides.

A particularly touching story centres around pregnant Kate Middleton“s engagement ring. She poignantly chose to wear the distinctive 18-carat blue sapphire and diamond rock given to her by Prince William during their wedding ceremony in 2011.

The striking ring belonged to his mother, Princess Diana, and the dashing prince chose to pop the question with it during their safari holiday in Kenya. It is reported to have cost Prince Charles £28,000, and is now apparently worth £85,000.

While Kate chose to wear her engagement ring at her wedding, other brides have chosen to keep their hands bare. Princess Charlene was presented with a stunning pear-shaped Repossi engagement ring by Prince Albert at their proposal, but during the service chose not to keep it on.

The couple exchanged 18-carat white gold platinum rings by Cartier at their glamorous marriage in July 2011.

Perhaps the most unusual engagement ring belongs to Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who was then Princess Maxima before Queen Beatrix abdicated in April this year.

In line with the country”s national colour, Princess Maxima was given an orange, oval-shaped diamond flanked by two tear-drop shaped diamonds and set in two diamond encrusted bands by her husband King Willem-Alexander.

Princess Letizia of Spain, on the other hand, wore her classic 16 baguette diamond engagement ring with a white gold trim alongside her gold wedding band at the service. She married Prince Felipe of Asturias in 2004.

While Princess Mary of Denmark exchanged solid wedding bands with Crown Prince Frederik on the day, she is said to have had her deceased mother”s wedding ring stitched into her dress close to her heart.
